Zen 12x12 milling Aluminum

Postby johntech » Sat Jul 09, 2016 12:44 pm

Hi Guys ! Been a while since I've been on here. Still using my machine and still doing lots of cutting.

I'm working on a bigger machine and needed to resize a bearing mount for a larger bearing. It's the weekend and no shops open on the weekend. Soooo I thought I'd give my Zen 12x12 a shot at milling out the bearing mount. Well it's been running for about a hour and a half and it's about 1/4 the way into the cut. I'm taking .001 depth cuts at 5 IPM at 8K rpm. Yea it's slow and tedious but it's getting the job done. I added the 2 pictures just so you'd know I wasn't bluffing about cutting aluminum...

Well about 3 1/2 hours later and the milling is done. Considering the mill is made of PVC along with my cheap calipers , the bearing fits nicely with about 1/2 mil of slop.

I'd say that was a huge success!!!

That's awesome! I've been looking at my z-axis again, and I'm unhappy with the number of extra pieces I've added. I'd rather just have some nice clean z-axis bearing plates (aluminum, threaded), an aluminum z-axis assembly, and then mount my spindle directly to that (with threaded holes).... so clean... :)

Time to start laying out some drawings and taking some measurements. And ordering some aluminum endmills.

Thanks,
jasno

That looks great, John.

Can you try it on steel now ;)

I have tried on steel and the 12x12 flexes too much even with small cuts.
Most of my future projects will be in aluminum now that I know the 12x12 will handle it.
