Successful first engraving on my 12x12 3D

Testing my newly-assembled machine:

Started with http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/jpd/item/2008680292/, traced and resized in Inkscape and then exported the path with Gcodetools.
Using LinuxCNC and the V-carve bit that came with the ER11 spindle.

Incidentally, is there any way to get a longer shaft on that spindle? I got the 12x12 3D so I could fit bigger things in it, but it's sort of a pain to secure a high, stable platform to hold flat objects in range of the bit when I don't need to cut big things.

Nice work. Looks good. Check out the Youtube video with the link below. That guy extended his Z axis. This maybe something to consider if you can't get a longer shaft.

Hope this helps.

Ah, I see. He's made additional parts to hold the spindle lower than normal. That seems like it would work, but I wonder if the whole thing would flex more when doing deeper cuts. Not like I'm going to be cutting PCB traces on this thing, but something to consider. From what I'm reading, unreasonably long shafts on spinning things aren't a good idea anyway.

Longer shaft will flex too, and flex while spinning leads to vibration.
